REV. DR. JO ANN BROWNING

Co-Pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Fort Washington, Maryland is the Reverend Dr. Jo Ann Browning. She has got married to the Reverend Dr. Grainger Browning, Jr., who has been appointed as the Senior Pastor since 1983 of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. She is the pleased mother of two youthful grown-up kids, Grainger III (spouse, Courtney and grandkids, Kaylah Jo Ann and Grainger IV) and Candace Davis (husband, Andre, and granddaughter, Imani and grandson, Andre, III).

Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning has graduated from Boston University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications. After that, she completed and got a Master of Divinity Degree in 1986 and a Doctorate of Ministry from Howard University School of Divinity in 1991. During this time, she was a legatee of the Benjamin E. Mays and the Pew Fellowships.

2017 marks Pastor Browning’s 36th year in ministry. Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning is appointed and start preaching in 1982 at Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Church in Chapel Oaks, MD. During this nine month of a period 1983, She Started serving on ministerial staff at St. Paul A.M.E. in Cambridge, MA. At her starting year in church, with 17 trustful members and a $12,000 budget, her husband was assigned to pastor Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning starts assisting her husband with no delay and was serving as an assistant minister in 1985. From 1986-1990, she became an assistant pastor and then co-pastor in 1991 and serving the designation along with.

In 1998, Bishop Vinton R. Anderson (deceased), then presiding prelate of the Second Episcopal District, made the anomalous appointment as co-pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Since then, this remarkable appointment has continued with the contemporary reappointment in April 2017 from Bishop James Levert Davis. Currently, Ebenezer’s membership exceeds 8,000 with numerous ministries.

Besides her pastoral authority, Pastor Browning has preached, taught, and facilitated workshops throughout the United States, Germany, South Africa Haiti, Israel, Barbados, and Bermuda. A perceived pioneer and community leader, Dr. Jo Ann Browning has gotten various honors and awards. In 2006, she got an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from A.M.E. University in Monrovia, Liberia.

For extraordinary 10 years, she served on the Spelman College’s Sister’s Chapel Wisdom Center Executive Board after she respected with honor to preach Spelman College’s Baccalaureate Ceremony in 2007. She was inducted as an honorary member into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in July 2002.

In 2016, Dr. Jo Ann Browning became a member of the Board of Governors at Wesley Theological Seminary and accepted the call to serve on the Board of Rising TOGETHER: The National Mentorship Network for Women of Color in Ministry (WOCIM) in 2017.

In 2006, She has published her first book by herself, the name of the book is “Our Savior, Our Sisters, Ourselves: Biblical Teachings & Reflections on Women’s Relationships” which explore the realities of being a wife, mother, black woman, and minister. and realities of being a black woman, wife, mother, and minister and designed to empower and bless women as they continue on their own journeys of faith.

In June 2009, Dr. Jo Ann browning second book was released, entitled “Faithful, Focused and Fearless: Lessons to Fortify Your Future”.  The third edition of this book is self-published by her in 2018. As Rev Dr. Jo Ann Browning has a heart for women, she has also organized and collect over 34 annual women’s spiritual retreats, attracting thousands from throughout the U.S. and around the world.

Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning is grateful to be one of the trailblazers of women in ministry, to till the new ground, wade in the waters and to serve God’s people.
